We have "stal" in toponomy. Some names date from a period when written
resources were in Latin only.



1 - One well known occurence is the place "Herstal" at the North-East of
Liège, a few miles South of the language border and well-known for its
factory of arms.

"*Haristal*" in the year 777.

Carnoy gives "*stable*" for the army, while the nearby *Herstappe* (now at
the Flemish side of the language border) is explained as storage place '*
stapel*' (pile) for the army. "*Harstaples*" in 1250.

Is there an etymological link between *stable* and *staple*?

I read "*Stal*bridge" (Dorset) was called "*Staple*bridge" before (Thomas
Hinde, The Domesday Book, 1995)



2 - Other toponomical occurencies in Belgium



- *Stalle*, a dependency of the Brussels municipality Ukkel. It was a
baronny. ("La baronnie de Stalle et d'Overhem", p. 123-138 in Charles Viane,
"Uccle au temps de jadis", 1950. [1173, Waltherus de Stalle, 1173 Henricus
de Stallo, ...]



- *Opstal,* a name for a dependency of several municipalities as Buggenhout,
Kampenhout..Carnoy leaves it open whether the orogin is "stable" or "used
space".



- *Stal,* a dependency of the former municipality of Koersel, once part of
the Liège-Brabantish condomium Lummen.



- 3 - In French



Littré (1872) gives for "*installer*"; étymologie:

Wallon "*estaler*", placer, du bas-lat "*installare*"

de "*in*", en, dans et le bas-lat. "*stallus*", stalle



and for "*stalle*" (special place in a church or theatre) ; étymologie

Bas.-lat. "*stallum*", "*stalla*", de l'anc. haut-allem. "*stal*", huis
clos, chambre.



for "*étable*", étymologie

Picard *étale, étave, étaule*; Berry *étoule, étaule*; Wallon *stâf*;
provenç *estable*.. espan. *establo,* du lat. *stabulum,* de *stare*, être
fixé ... Etable se disait de l'écurie (stable for horses).



I think we have an etymological mix of the germanic "*stal*" and the latin
verb "*stare*".



("bas-latin" is used for latin of +- AD 400 till 500; I guess it must have
been a difficult task at the time for standardizing in a written form what
was emerging in regional language variants)



- 4 - Is there a "*sta*" root link between:

- staan, stehen, to stand

- stellen, put in place; herstellen, repair;

- stad (town)

- steen, stone

- staal, steel

- stal, stable (horses), sty (pigs); to "stall an animal".

- staple

- staiga (Ghotic) path (place to "go"), OHD stiga

- stijgen: go to a more elevated place

- ...?
