Dear Lowlanders,

With regard to this and any other thread, please remember to make your
postings relevant to our Lowlands focus. For instance, general German
literature is relevant only if you try to make a special point about
Northern Germany or any other region or culture within the Lowlands scope (
http://lowlands-l.net/).

On a personal note, Roger’s post reminds me to ask you what you think about
the idea of introducing other Lowlands literature in Lowlands-speaking
schools. For instance, in Limburg this would include not only (already
predominating) Standard Dutch literature and locally relevant Limburgish
literature but also literary samples of West Flemish, Zeelandic, Frisian and
Low Saxon, as well as literary samples of closely related Cleves and other
Low Frankish from across the border in Germany. Perhaps as an extension of
English studies, there could be literary samples of Scots as well. I imagine
that such an educational model would be particularly relevant within
Continental European and Southern African (Afrikaans) Lowlands contexts,
because of fairly good mutual comprehensibility.

Maybe *we* should come up with a reader published for this purpose. Of
course, our collection of Lowlands Wren versions (
http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/) could even be worked into something like
that.

..... seine Lebensgeschichte stimmt mich nachdenklich und läßt zugleich
dunkle Erinnerungen jener "braunen Zeit" aufkommen, hm, m.E. ein trauriges
und heikles Thema ... (eines Dichters).

I think every language has its reference literature, I mean texts one learns
in one of the first lessons in the foreign language.

For my German I remember the text below was one of the first German texts we
analysed gramatically in our Limburgish school..
