In our region in Stellingwarf (zuudoost-Fryslân, NL) we have a little
village called: Appelscha.

In 1247 it was called: Appels. ('scha' means 'bos', also: de appelbos.)

verstehe.....?  English 'crab apple' = Holtappel  oder Höltingsappel
oder Paradiesappel (dieses mag ich!)  oder Stäkappel?

Dieses letzte "Stäkappel" -  kommt es von Stake + appel her? Wenn ja,
wieso?

das Oxford Etymologisches Wörterbuch gibt Swedisch 'skrabba'(wildapfel)
als vermütliches Stammwort für 'crab'. Gibt es ein germaniches
Gleichwort?

Heather,

Please bear in mind that the orthography predominantly used for the Low
Saxon dialects of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania represents vowel length
inconsistently compared with the predominant orthographies used for dialects
of western regions.

In the West we would spell this word *Stẹẹkappel* or *Stääkappel*.

*Stẹẹk* (*Stääk*) is the equivalent of German *Stich *and* Stech*..., thus
‘stab’, ‘sting’, ‘stitch’, ‘prick’ ...

The verbal equivalent is *stẹken* (*stäken*).
