Hallo Lowlanders:



I have a question that’s been festering for a long time now. But, whenever
it festers, I’m not near a computer.



I’ve noticed for years now that folks in the USA say, “I’ll try and do
that,” instead of what I think it should be, i.e., “I’ll try to do that.” I
hear it everywhere, and I don’t think it’s just a Texasism. It seems
limited to the verb try +[inf], so that “and” replaces “to.” Does anyone
else have a pet peeve about this? And what’s going on linguistically to
cause this?


To me they mean the same thing, but am I missing something? Is there any
similar construction in other Lowlands languages?
