How about "He'll come and take it"? "He'll come to take it" is different;
it's purpose. That fits with what Kirsteen says.

Where does the "should" come from? Most such usages do indeed have roots in
older stages or regional varieties of the language, so your question is a
good one. I say try and verb all the time as do most people I know. Exactly
how do you decide what it "should" be?

Not just American; you certainly hear it in England. Come to think of it, I
say it myself. I don't think of it as "try to do it"; I am saying I will
try, and then do it.
