Might I also add that my experience of Finland is that most of the native
Finnish speakers I know resent having to learn Swedish at school; many
thought it a waste of valuable time that could be spent learning something
else - most thought more English.  Despite the fact that to work in any
service industry you must be fluent in both, plus English, it seems to have
done little to reduce the general antipathy towards Swedish-speaking Finns.
I was surprised to find it was so strong even amongst young people.

I've never actually met any Fenno-Swedes so I don't have their take on the
subject, and given that all my friends over there are Suomi, I'm unlikely
to.

Trouwen kan voortaan in het "Gentsche" dialect

*In de "trèwkapelle" van het Gentse Stadhuis huwen volgende week vrijdag de
eerste koppels in het Gentse dialect. "Omdat huwen in het Frans, Duits en
Engels kan, lieten we de verplichte wettekst met de wederzijdse
verplichtingen in de streektaal herschrijven", verklaart schepen van
burgerzaken Catharina Segers (Open Vld).*
"Gent is een tolerante stad met respect voor ieders eigenheid", motiveert
Segers. "Zo wordt geregeld de wettekst met de "Wederzijdse rechten en
Plichten van beide echtenoten" in het Frans, Duits of Engels hernomen.
Voortaan zal, na het Nederlands, die tekst ook in het "Gentsch" hernomen
kunnen worden."

De stad Gent sprak voor het vertalen van de passage uit het Burgerlijk
Wetboek Eddy Levis aan, de bestuurder van *Variaties vzw*, de
Koepelorganisatie voor Dialecten en Oraal Erfgoed in Vlaanderen, die nauw
samenwerkt met het *Seminarie voor Nederlandse Taalkunde en Dialectologie
(UGent).

*Vrijdag 15 juli zullen de eerste twee koppels in het Gentse dialect
trouwen. "*Da kadert in de doelstellijnge veur de vierijnge zuu persuunlijk
meugelijk te moake, op moate van 't koppel, zeg moar*", knipoogt Segers.

Starting Jan 1, 2012 bargemen and skippers on the Westerschelde in the South
West of the Netherlands must be able to communicate in Dutch or English.
This will handicap people from Western Wallonia and from Northern France,
sailing on the Schelde river.

Le néerlandais ou l'anglais de rigueur sur l'Escaut occidental

La règle sera déjà d'application pour les navigations maritime et intérieure
à partir du 20 juillet, avec une période de transition jusqu'au 1er janvier
2012.
Les navigateurs qui désirent passer par l'Escaut occidental avec un bateau
de croisière devront dès le mois d'août être en mesure de parler le
néerlandais ou l'anglais, sous peine de se voir refuser l'accès au bras de
mer, indiquent vendredi les autorités néerlandaises de la navigation.

La règle sera déjà d'application pour les navigations maritime et intérieure
à partir du 20 juillet, avec une période de transition jusqu'au 1er janvier
2012. A cette date, les autorités de la navigation appliqueront fermement la
règle, qui date de 1991. L'explication de ce durcissement est l'augmentation
du nombre de croisières, et par conséquent du nombre de situation
dangereuses, expliquent les autorités.
