My grandfather used to use the word "widauw-wisse", to describe, the thin
branches of the willow, of which chairs and baskets were made.

Luc reports:
I looked up the name in Dutch, and found another word in connection to 'Scots
*widdy*, Limburgish *wiej*, and German *Weide'*.

Nl: Wederik, from Middelnederlands 'Wede/weede' meaning *twig,  *from Latin
'vimen' (twig)

Has anyone brought to attention the English cognate (I take it) of the
Dutch, Scots & so on 'Widdy' &c?
I refer to the word 'Withy"; vidé the Chambers 20th Century dictionary -
the osier willow, any willow, a flexible twig or branch especially one used
for binding, [ OE *widhig* (willow) cf 'widdy' & 'withe'.
Chambers Etymological Dictionary gives 'withe' as related to Icelandic '*
vidhir*', German '*weide*', Greek '*itys*', Latin '*vitis*' & Sanskrit '*vi*'
- to tie or plait.

sowie die unter (siehe)  'Weib' behandelten Wörter. Die Weide ist also nach
ihren Biegsamen, zum Flechten dienenden Zweigen benannt.
