This is widely reported, but is based on a misunderstanding of what the
proposition entailed. What was being suggested was to translate important
documents into German, to enable German-speaking Americans with
less-than-fluent English to follow the governmental goings-on. It certainly
does say something about the strength of the community, to be sure, but not
quite what it would say if they were suggesting that German be used as THE
official language.
