Hello Marcel, my "belly feeling" accords with yours, "backen" when
meaning "to stick" is more Low German than High German. I would never
expect a person from southern Germany to say "Du hast so backsige Finger,
wasch dir die Hände" ("Your fingers are so sticky, wash your hands"). Also,
in low German the sides of the face are called "Backe", while in High
German the word is "Wange". Can this be because these are the parts where
you hit a person...? "Jemandem eine kleben" means just this, and "kleben"
is "backen". Often also the sides of a person's butt are called "Backen",
"Hinterbacken" or "Arschbacken" (caution, vulgar expression), and this
seems to me to be more northern German than southern, too; but then I have
little contact with Bavarians :-) Looks like I have to make some research
expeditions into these wild zones :-))

Hartlich

Marlou
