Hallo Marlou,

Interesting! So 'Backe' is more Low German, when High German would prefer
'Wange'?

I think this particular 'Backe', denoting 'face' or 'cheek' is from another
origin. I once read in a publication by Marlies Philippa that this can also
be found in Dutch 'kinnebak', 'mombakkes' and 'bakkes'. But since it is
very hard to find cognates outside Low German and Dutch, she thinks it must
be a substrate word, i.e. a word from a language that was spoken in our
regions before the Indoeuropean (Germanic) tribes settled here.

So the similarity that this noun has with the verb might be a coincidence.

Groetjes,

Marcel

*Backe* ‘cheek’ is believed to be connected with the English "back" (< bæc).
