Dear Roland, this is really interesting! The 19th-century beard fashion is
called "Backenbart" in German, and this is *High German* too!! A foreign
loanword for it was "Favoris" (must be "fabreezn"??). The beacons by the
sea are called "Bake" (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bake_%28Seezeichen%29)
in German. Big fires by the sea are called "Biikebrennen" (
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biike) in Frisian, "Biike" being the fire
(beacon). Now whether all these words are related is beyond me, I fear we
may be getting on a wrong track here. Surely the experts can enlighten us?
