[Lowlands-l] Kidnapping RE: Risposta di assenza

Hartelijk bedankt, Ingmar - I really needed a laugh, as I've been up all night grading summer session finals and preparing and repairing fall syllabi and my brain is melting.

I personally have not been kidnapped by the mafia, but rather the Comanches and Kiowas, as I now work with Native American languages and no longer with Dutch dialects, as I did for my MA at the UvA. Still, I enjoy following LLC, when I have time (and when I don't, I file them for reading at a later date - I have a whole stack from when I was in the throes of finishing my dissertation) and I do hope that the list continues to be active... Although I have noticed that it is not as active as it once was, I considered that since it is summer, perhaps everyone is on vacation? (In Italy, evidently - surely the weather there is kinder than here - we are baking at nearly 40 degrees C, as usual for July.)

"RIPOSTA DI ASSENZA"  It sounds almost like the title for a romantic Italian film, song or novel, but it just means Response of Absence.
But who is absent? Why is this in Italian? My fantasy is triggered, is Ron in Italy, why don't we hear from him anymore? Or is our list kidnapped by the mafia maybe?
Why do we only get so very few messages, what happened to the rest ?
It's a mystery. And a shame too
