Announcement: Melbourne Linguistics in the Pub Wednesday 15th June 2016

*Topic: Social Media and Language Documentation*
*Leading the discussion: Peter Schuelke, University of Hawaii*

There is great potential for language documentation and conservation
through social media sites. The potential benefits include corpus building,
community participation, and effect on language attitudes. While the
benefits are many, ethical issues are raised including new challenges to
consent and considerations towards anonymity.

Social media is a largely untapped resource in the language documentation,
maintenance, and revitalization fields. The goals of this discussion are to
introduce a few examples of social media use in language documentation and
conservation and address it's potential benefits and challenges.
