Eavesdropping

Many thanks to the nearly twenty colleagues who replied to my query
about scenes of eavesdropping in Russian literature.  Several of you
mentioned _Hero of Our Time_, which my colleague here actually recalled
reading in the Penguin edition on a train between New York and
Springfield some fifty years ago.  He will be thrilled with the harvest
of answers and grateful -- as I am -- to _kollegi-seelangsovtsy_.
