Does anyone know a current and commonly used Russian phrase or word
for "Native American," or other native peoples?  My Russian assistant
from Moscow says there is something but she cannot recall it.

We need something that is NOT an elaborate descriptive periphrase,
but a usable expression, used in the same way that "Native American"
is used when the speaker wants to be a little more formal, more
respectful and more exact.

While we're at it, is there a standard spelling for "Navajo" in
Russian? -- that's what my N.A. student is.
