NEW COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT: CORNELL UNIVERSITY SUMMER SCHOOL

SUMMER 2004

 NES [Near Eastern Studies] 280

Bosnian Literature
   from 1900 to the Present

(also SEBCRL 280)

The goal of this brief survey course is to introduce students to selected
works of
20th and 21st century Bosnian literature. The reading material - novels,
short
stories, poetry and theatre - will include authors from an older,
established generation of Bosnian writers (Andric, Selimovic,
Samokovlija), as well as a number
of younger authors, some of whom are writing in exile (Skenderija,
Mehmedinovic and
Hemon). Each work will be examined in its cultural context. Lectures and
discussions
will be based on English translations, but native speakers of
Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian are encouraged to do some reading in the
original. Familiarity with Bosnian or Balkan history is recommended but
not
required. No
previous knowledge of Bosnian language or literature is needed to enroll
in this
course.
