True.  However, I did forget to mention that I've been using Pages  
(Apple's answer to MS Word) and it actually does a good job of  
rendering the diacritics correctly.  And with the new version of  
Pages (version 3), you can export a Pages file in MS Word format for  
sharing.  I haven't actually done this yet since I just got the new  
version, so I can't speak to how good it converts to Word format.   
Typically, I'll just pdf a file that I want to share.
