marking stressed vowels in OS X 10.4

As I am in the middle of a project involving the production of large quantities of stressed Russian text on an Apple (OS X.3.5), I feel I may have something to contribute here. Though my final text will (I hope!) by produced by professional typesetters, I find the various fonts that come with the Apple to be perfectly acceptable and have used them in the past for student hand-outs and the like. To supplement what has already been said, it may be worth knowing that when the Character Palette is open, it is possible to copy individual characters that you may wish to insert on a regular basis (e.g. the combining acute accent, the « » inverted commas) to a section called 'favorites' and that the CP can be left on this setting, which saves a lot of time. Nor is it necessary to close the CP after using it each time; I leave it permanently open, but 'parked' in the 'dock' and reactivate it whenever I need it. True, it has the slightly unnerving habit of spontaneously reactivating itself at inopportune moments (I suspect this is a design feature, intended to remind us users of our place in the scheme of things), but not so often as to cross the boundary from eccentrically endearing to mildly irritating.

There are two other hints that might be helpful. The Russian font that comes with the Apple uses the 'typewriter' layout, while I prefer a 'translit' layout. After some digging around in the international fonts section of the computer, I unearthed a Bulgarian translit font. It lacks (or has hidden in some weird location) ё and э, but I insert these in the same way as I insert stress marks, and though this may an odd way of proceeding, I still find it faster than trying to use the 'typewriter' layout. The other (and I apologise if you have worked this out for yourself) is that I find inserting stresses much less of a pain if I type a section of 2-3 pages (of mixed English and Russian) and then go through it putting in all the stresses, rather than doing it a word at a time.

I hope this is helpful.

John Dunn.

Subject: [SEELANGS] marking stressed vowels in OS X 10.4

I just switched from an IBM to a Mac, and I am having trouble getting Word
for Mac to show accented vowels in Russian.
I found the following promising answers in the Seelangs archives:

You can also download Apple Russian fonts from their web site in Moscow:
]http://www.apple.ru/download/?ext_fonts>. If you need accented vowels, use
the "show character palette"(where the flag is in the menu once you select
a
2nd keyboard in System Preferences), type the vowel, and then select
'combining diacritical marks', and the vowel will be accented.

The 'combining character' facility can be used with any of the Cyrillic
fonts that come supplied with the OS.

I managed to find the character palette, but, unfortunately, I cannot find
the "combining diacritical marks" or "combining character" option there.
I also am being denied access to the Russian fonts on the webpage above (I
have downloaded Stuffit Expander, and have an appropriate OS.)

Any advice on how to make the above solution work or any other thoughts on
ways to mark stress on Word for Mac would be most appreciated by this new
Mac user!
