I believe the reference is to Chekhov's one-act joke, titled "Tragik
ponevole (iz dachnoi jizni)" (An Involuntary Tragedian (From the Life of
Vacationers) in Senelick's translation). There is an infamous line
there: "Ty - muj, a slovo 'muj' v perevode na dachnyi iazyk znachit
besslovestnoe jivotnoe, na kotorom mozhno ezdit' i vozit' kladi skol'ko
ugodno, ne boias' vmeshatel'stva obshchestva pokrovitel'stva
zhivotnykh."

Subject: [SEELANGS] Dachnyi muzh

Dear colleagues:

I am working on an annotated translation of Dachnyi muzh by Ivan
Shcheglov
(pseudonym of I.L. Leontiev). I have come upon a reference to a story by
Chekhov with the same title, but can't seem to locate it (having
searched
his PSS).

Can anyone help me locate it?
