In fact, what is the point of mentioning the tattoo in the story?
If the point is to show that the tattooed person is tough and
pugnacious, rather than e.g. refined and esthetic, saying "a
paratrooper's tattoo" would do that much better than "an
airborne tattoo" for the English-language audience.
