A question about Bazhov's life, and some translation questions

A friend of mine who lived through the siege of St. P was walking along 
one of the canals when a friend of his came by. The friend was furious 
and wanted to know why my friend had stood him up and not come to his 
home to join him and his family for dinner. My friend asked his friend 
when he had invited him!
