I actually opened the text attachment. It had instructions for unsubscribing
in Spanish and English so I went and did that.

Then I went into my browser preferences to delete the cookie that was added.
See, the point of sending those HTML spams isn't necessarily to get you to
respond, but for your email program or browser to download the graphic
files, which then allows them to give you a cookie and to track you on any
other site that has access to your cookie.

Then they re-sell your browsing habits (without your identity attached, in
this case) to marketers who are interested in that sort of thing. If you
see, when looking at the HTML source code of an HTML spam, that your email
address is encoded in the unsubscribe, subscribe or submit links, then they
can attach your email address to the cookie.

Neat, eh?
