Perhaps because it's not slang; _doughnut dolly_ was apparently an
official Red Cross name for female volunteers. This is mentioned
in the HDAS entry for _donut hole,_ which is found under that
spelling and not cross-referenced at the entry for _doughnut,_
due no doubt to the ineptness of the Random House editor who
worked on it.
