I've noticed that the Economist often writes "greenery" when it means
"environmental issues," "environmentalism," or "ecology." How common is
this?

Here's an example: "Jim Connaughton, a White House adviser on greenery,
sniffs at the mandatory targets—though it is hard to see how a voluntary
system would really change behaviour."
