Just thought of checking google on the sequence "I coward out" and
found three that clearly involve the past tense, so this is not a new
invention:

========
I coward out of a fight I didn't want to be in because I hated my son
of a gun commanding officer.

the fact that I coward out and had to start school...

There has been times when I know I should have said something or done
something that I coward out on.
=========

and for a third person example (with another eggcorn lurking not too
subtly within):

=========
And most important Josephus had other reasons for rewriting them as
doing so, since he coward out of a pack made with his comrades.
=========

Ain't language wonderful?!
