When I was in elementary school (1953-1959) I had a subscription to a
children's magazine entitled "Jack and Jill".  I distinctly remember encountering the
mnemonic "Spring forward, fall back" in this magazine, specifically in the
column that appeared each month under the pseudonym "Finnie the Office
Goldfish".
