Having wondered whether the date of this sense of "red hot" wasn't
later than the 18th century, I looked into the OED and
found: "red-hot" 2.b. Of things, actions, etc.: Burning, scorching,
urgent, violent, furious, etc. Also, sensational, lively, exciting,
intense. 1647 Ward Simp. Cobler; the next cite is c1790.
