IMDb tells me that _Exotica_ , the motion picture, came out in 1994.  The
girl might be eighteen, but not fifteen or sixteen, AFAICT.

You're probably right about "looking sideways."  And how about the unrelated
"commit sideways" (commit suicide)?  From before 1914, IIRC.
