Indeed, JL, I should have noted that you shared cites for the
"Gtmo./GTMO" abbreviation going back to 1919 as part of that 2010 thread.

1945 is still the date to beat for "Gitmo" as an acronym-style word rather
than the earlier abbreviation on which it was based. I'm investigating the
history of "Gitmo" for my Wall Street Journal column this week, so any
additional research findings would be much appreciated.
