In the article by Woidich/Zack in this volume
http://www.mohamedrabeea.com/books/book1_10519.pdf it's explained as: "ǵ
has to be seen here as a slightly palatalized /g/ [gj]" (p.42) - it
appears to be a stage in the gradual transition from j to g in the Egyptian
dialect - an unusual combination of both sounds.
