possible folklore method of identifying malaria

In Laos, it is believed that bad spirits at night cause the fever that comes
and goes -- malaria. So people don't go out at night. This is pretty smart
because the Anopheles mosquitoes feed at night. Is there any similar belief
in NW native folklore? If so, it might point to malaria. However, if the
disease only arrived in the 16th or 17th centuries, that might not be enough
time to build such a folkore.
