*page 135:  'The Indians ... appeared exceedingly anxius to know when I
would come back and "cumtux na na," which, in white man's vocabulary,
means, "Deliver my inaugural address."'
--but then I realized, IT'S JUST ANOTHER GODDAMN 19TH-CENTURY TYPO!

But dig this, Hines's book is filled with howlers, only howlers that would
be correct if they weren't typeset by some lead-poisoned shop monkey:

*page 127:  'I saluted them in the jargon, "Vilayhaum six," "How do you
do," but I fancied their responses were not very cordial.'

*page 133:  'Hall informed me that the Indians at the ferry thought that I
was hyac cloas tilicum (a very good man) and all danger had now passed
away.'

*page 136:  'They seemed greatly delighted at the prospect [of my return]
and, coming close to me, all yelled, with all their might, "Nyas close,"
-- Very good.'

Anyhow, I love unintentional humor as much as the next fella.  Cheers,
