Phil, Mike,

The idea of 'gaol, prison' in French has been associated for centuries
with the conditions of imprisonment ie 'iron' for 'chains', 'dry bread
and water' for the food, 'bars' for the window and 'straw' for the
bed... (I think it is more or less the same in English).
Here I think we have :
- 'la paille' (straw) as in 'coucher sur le paille (humide)', metaphor
for 'sit in jail'.
- 'la chaine' (chains) as in 'avoir des chaines au pieds' etc... (common
imprisonment metaphor, and final 'n' becoming 'l' as common phonetic
evolution). Klonas... ;-)

Regards, Yann.
