Peter Bakker in "A Basque etymology for the word "Iroquois" (_Man in the
Northeast_ no. 40, 1990, pp. 89-93) suggests IROQUOIS is a name from the
Basque-Algonquian pidgin meaning 'killer people', ultimately from Basque
(h)ilo 'kill' + koa 'person'.
