translation of "hallow cultus"

I wonder if someone could give me a translation of "hallow cultus".  It
comes from an old newspaper account of settlers overturning their scow on a
river trip:

 

"An Indian by the name of Quiak heard their cries for help and came to their
rescue in an Indian canoe. Indian Quiak shook his head as he gazed upon the
white man's boat and said "Halow Cultus".
