Summer Internships at the Center for Advanced Research

The Center for Advanced Research at PricewaterhouseCoopers is seeking
interns for the summer of 2008. These interns will perform important tasks
for two of our projects - Magic Lens and Sherlock.

The Magic Lens project is developing new techniques for the detection and
display of similarities in documents -- even those based in paper. There
are three openings for summer interns:
Computational Linguistics specialist: Duties include evaluating existing
methods and developing new approaches for challenging problems in document
concept classification and similarity metrics, semantic parsing, text
mining, and paraphrase detection. The candidate must be currently enrolled
in a computer science, computational linguistics, or similar graduate
program and should have prior experience dealing with complex language
processing problems. Programming will be required and familiarity with C#
or .NET is preferred.
Visualization specialist: Duties include evaluating existing methods and
developing new approaches for visualizing large data-sets, especially
clusters of items. The candidate must be currently enrolled in a computer
science, MIS, or similar graduate program and should have prior experience
dealing with prototype development or visualization of large datasets.
Some programming will be required and familiarity with C# or .NET is
preferred.
Image recognition specialist: Duties include applying existing methods and
developing new approaches to the comparison and recognition of images from
documents. Some programming will be required and familiarity with C# or
.NET is preferred.

Project Sherlock is developing software to detect and respond to
meaningful patterns in accounting data, drawing on techniques from
statistics, data modeling, data mining and machine learning. There are
three openings for summer interns:
Analytics Specialist: Duties include evaluating existing methods and
developing new approaches for challenging problems in classification,
anomaly detection, and exploratory data analysis. The candidate must be
currently enrolled in a computer science, statistics, or similar graduate
program and should have prior experience dealing with large and/or complex
data analysis problems. Programming will be required and familiarity with
SQL, Matlab, and R is preferred.
User Experience/Interface Specialist: Duties will include assisting with
usability studies, design and implementation of human-computer interfaces
to facilitate analysis of large quantities of transactional data. The
candidate must be currently enrolled in a computer science, MIS, or
similar graduate program and should have prior experience in user
interface design and implementation.
Business/Data Mining Analyst: The intern will work with both client and
research staff to identify and solve business problems that can be
addressed with statistical, data mining, or other existing analytical
techniques. The candidate should be currently enrolled in an MIS, computer
science, or similar program and should have strong quantitative skills and
prior experience analyzing business data in an industrial setting. SQL
experience is required and familiarity with OLAP and data mining toolboxes
is preferred.

Each intern will select a task for the summer, the details of which will
be based on the match of project needs to student backgrounds, but will be
hands-on, involving substantial design, analysis and interaction with live
data. Summer interns, like all members of the staff at the Center, are
expected to be curious, eager to learn, passionate to contribute their
ideas, accepting of criticism and suggestions, and willing to
constructively confront difficult problems and situations. The candidate
should also have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

All positions are in San Jose, CA. Compensation is commensurate with
experience. PricewaterhouseCoopers is an equal opportunity employer.
To apply for an internship position, please send an e-mail with your area
of interest and resume to navneet.n.bal at us.pwc.com
