[Corpora-List] PhD Position in Statistical Machine Translation, London

The Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London
has a fully funded PhD position in the area of Statistical Machine
Translation.

The PhD position is in the MataHari project (Machine Translation with
Harvested Internet Resources) which focuses on utilizing Internet
resources to learn statistical translation models for translating from
a number of foreign languages into English. More information on the

The starting date of the PhD position is Spring 2008 or earlier.

The successful candidate will be based in the information retrieval
group. Queen Mary's information retrieval group
(http://ir.dcs.qmul.ac.uk) is actively pursuing a variety of research
initiatives, covering areas such as cross-language retrieval, machine
translation, structured document retrieval, natural language
processing, and large-scale probabilistic reasoning.

Applicants must have a strong background in Computing Science and/or
closely related areas. Appropriate academic backgrounds include
Computational Linguistics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, all
with a strong emphasis on Computing Science. A successful candidate
should:

* have a good knowledge of programming in at least one of the following
   languages: C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl.

* enjoy working with large, real-world data sets

* be interested in working on language-related research problems

Knowledge of any of the foreign languages addressed in this project is
not a requirement for this position.

The studentship includes the tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of
14,600 GBP (approx. $30,100 or 20,900 EUR) per year for three years,
plus some travel funding to attend international conferences.
