Description: 

Three tenure positions (1 Professor, 2 lecturers) in English Linguistics will be available next year in the Department of English Studies of the University Paris-Diderot Paris 7. On satisfactory completion of a 12 month probationary period, the successful candidates will be appointed to permanent positions with great potential in teaching and research. 

 

Gross annual starting salary: approximately 25,000 euros for lecturers, 36,000 euros for professors.

 

Candidates for the maître de conferences positions should have completed a PhD:

 

*       in the field of English Phonetics / Phonology for the Spoken Language, Phonetics / Phonology position, 

*      in the field of Syntax, Enunciation Theory, Sociolinguistics, Diachrony / Language Change for the other position. 

 

Early career applicants should also be able to demonstrate an excellent potential for research. Preference will be given to candidates who have some background in the teaching of English as a foreign language and experience in the production of audio-visual material as well as corpus resources. Good working knowledge of French is also essential. 

 

Candidates for the professor position should have completed an "habilitation à diriger des recherches" (or an equivalent doctoral degree) in the field of English Linguistics. They should be able to teach a range of linguistics courses such as Introduction to Linguistics, Syntactic Theory, Phonology, Morphology, Language Acquisition / Psycholinguistics, "agrégation" courses in English Linguistics as well as more advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise. Excellent knowledge of French is also required.

 

Teaching and Administration: The teaching load is 192 hours a year, mostly at the undergraduate level for the maître de conferences positions, mostly at the graduate level for the professor position. A significant contribution to administration, research supervision and extramural funding for research is also expected.

Application: The application procedure for both lectureship and professorship takes place in two stages. 

 

STAGE 1. 'QUALIFICATION' 

 

Applicants are required to go through a preliminary process of national selection ('qualification'). In order to obtain 'qualification', candidates should first apply online on the website of the Ministry of Education and Research ('Ministère de l'Education Nationale, Enseignement Supérieur et Recherche') before 16th October 2007.

 

They will then receive the names and addresses of two referees, to whom the full application is to be submitted. Candidates whose application has been successful will be officially notified in February 2008. 'Qualified' candidates for teaching/research positions in French universities will then be eligible to apply for any of the positions that will be advertised in 2008 and the next three years. 

 

STAGE 2. 'RECRUTEMENT' (APPLICATIONS FOR SPECIFIC POSITIONS IN FRENCH UNIVERSITIES) 

 

Specific positions will be advertised on the Ministry's website in February 2008. The closing date for applications is generally in late March/early April. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in early May, and immediately informed of the University's decision.
