Jena University Language & Information Engineering (JULIE) Lab at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Germany) invites applications for a 3-year fixed-term contracted, full-time PostDoc position (German pay-scale TV-L 13, with possible extension based on performance evaluation) in the area of

”Semantic Modeling and Text Analytics for the Life Sciences“

This position constitutes part of our involvement in the prestigious DFG-funded (Deutsche For- schungsgemeinschaft) Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) AquaDiva – “Understanding the Links between Surface and Subsurface Biogeosphere” (SFB 1076) and offers exciting opportunities for internationally highly visible research activities. The following areas of work are expected to be covered by the successful applicant for the PostDoc position:

Development and maintenance of ontologies and terminologies in various branches of the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, ecology and geology, in particular).
Use of semantic technologies for ontology engineering and terminology management; this requires solid acquaintance with Web-oriented knowledge representation languages (such as OWL) and associated inference engines (such as RACER, PELLET or FaCT) as well as knowledge base editors (such as PROTÉGÉ), annotation languages (based on XML) and technologies supporting RDF/S structures.
Integration of well-engineered ontological and terminological knowledge into text analytics pipelines for semantic search, information extraction, text mining and text classification under continuous development at JULIE Lab.

Applications are welcome from graduates with a sound education background in theoretical approaches and practical experience in semantic technologies (ontologies, Semantic Web tech- niques). This expertise is typically acquired from studies in computer science (informatics) or those with a strong computational backing (such as computational linguistics, bio- or chemoinformatics). Domain knowledge in the life or natural sciences mentioned above is a great asset for developing ontologies or terminologies for AquaDiva.
