I have not heard of r becoming z in Sanskrit. I read that now that Sanskrit is
a dead learned language like Latin, that in India the Sanskrit vocalic "r" is
conventionally pronounced "ri", whence many misspellings between "ri" and "r."
in Sanskrit down the centuries, including "Sanskrit" from "sam.skr.ta-". But
when Sanskrit was a spoken natural language, vocalic "r" would have been
vocalic "r" in the beginning, not "ri", else the two would not have been
written differently.
