Khanawi-lhaksta,

This is a first announcement of a 4th Chinuk Lu7lu to be held this
summer at Neah Bay, on the lands of the Makah Nation, Washington
State, USA.

This will be a fun weekend gathering to help people learn and practice
speaking Chinook Jargon.  The dates are Saturday and Sunday, August
11th and 12th, 2001.  (Anyone going to the Salish conference in
Chilliwack should be able to drive to Neah on Friday the 10th and get
there in time.)

Activities being brainstormed for this gathering include small-group
collaborations in Jargon storytelling (you can do it!); a salmon bake;
a session of /slahal/ bonegame; and a presentation on the sizeable
Nootkan / Makah component in the Jargon, for those who may have some
familiarity with Makah already.  Excursions and group meals are also
likely; your suggestions made via this CHINOOK list are warmly
welcomed, too.

Let me suggest that those interested in, or definitely planning on,
attending this Chinuk Lu7lu please notify Maria Pascua

This will help our committee make the best plans possible for all who
attend.

You'll want to make travel plans in advance, to decide the best way
for you to reach Neah Bay.  And it's a very good idea to make
reservations for a place to stay at Neah -- So here's some information
from Maria Pascua of the Makah cultural department:

^^^^^ Here is the phone number for 'Bay's Best' accommodations
available at our Tribal Center complex: (360)645-3325.  These rooms
are economical, $18.50 or so per night.  The rooms are Close to
Wyaatch River and Hobuck Beach, and about 15 minutes away from our
workshop site at the Makah Cultural & Research Center classroom.
August is a busy time here in Neah Bay, so be sure to make your
reservations as soon as possible.

The Bay's Best is probably the most comfortable facility.  There are
other resorts/motels, but they are tailored more towards the seasonal
tourist fisherman, and the amenities are limited.  There is a new
facility at Bowman Beach (King Fisher Enterprises) a 5 minute drive
from Neah Bay, which looks like a nice place to stay, and there is a
bed and breakfast in Clallam Bay which is about a 35 minute drive from
Neah Bay.
