UA Researchers Help Preserve Scottish Gaelic
Andrew Carnie, a UA linguistics professor, is leading a team of researchers
on a project to analyze and document the use of Scottish Gaelic. The team
hopes their work will help Scottish and Scottish-American communities
working to preserve the language.

Scottish Gaelic, an endangered language, is predicted to fall out of use
within the century as a consequence of native speakers turning to English
instead.
And those concerned with preserving and advancing the use of Scottish Gaelic
face another dilemma – the lack of measures accurately stating what
constitutes normative Gaelic speech.
At the University of Arizona, Andrew Carnie is leading a team in an analysis
of Scottish Gaelic and its use among native speakers.
