JOHANNESBURG – The University of the Free State
<http://ewn.co.za/Topic/University-of-the-Free-State-UFS> has confirmed it
will appeal a High Court ruling to stop a proposed change to its current
language policy.

Yesterday, the High Court in Bloemfontein ruled in favour of lobby groups,
AfriForum and Solidarity,
<http://ewn.co.za/2016/03/15/Solidarity--Afriforum-to-oppose-new-UFS-language-policy>to
stop a proposed change to the university’s current language policy.

Earlier this year, the institution reached a unanimous decision to make
English the primary medium of instruction from next year.

But the lobby groups say the removal of Afrikaans as a medium of
instruction at the institution, was a violation of the Constitution.

The university’s spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says the ruling was wrong.

“The advice is that the High Court judgment is, with respect, erroneous in
relation to legal principles and factual matters which are both fundamental
and far reaching. The university is, under the circumstance, to appeal the
judgment to the Supreme Court of Appeal.”
