<https://www.academia.edu/t/a-MKkLQqN-r7o0U/31763452/Language_Planning_for_Malay_in_Malaysia_A_Failure_or_a_Success_Case>

This article looks at the language planning that has been carried out since
Independence in Malaysia for the promotion of Malay, the national language.
After a sociolinguistic outline of the country, the different phases
language planning is normally divided into are examined in detail,
highlighting both the points that have proven to be successful and those
that have not. In the second part of the article the problems that have
been encountered during language planning and the reasons why Malay has not
succeeded in becoming a full-blown national language which even the
non-Malays can...

Social responses to climate change in Iron Age north-east Thailand: new
archaeobotanical evidence
<https://www.academia.edu/t/a-MKkLQqN-r7o0U/37684015/Social_responses_to_climate_change_in_Iron_Age_north-east_Thailand_new_archaeobotanical_evidence>

New evidence from archaeological investigations in north-east Thailand
shows a transition in rice farming towards wetland cultivation that would
have facilitated greater yields and surpluses. This evidence, combined with
new dates and palaeoclimatic data, suggests that this transition took place
in the Iron Age, at a time of increasingly arid climate, and when a number
of broader societal changes become apparent in the archaeological record.
For the first time, it is possible to relate changes in subsistence economy
to shifts in regional climate and water-management strategies, and to...

Millets and rice were important for the demographic history of China. This
review draws on current archaeobotanical evidence for rice and millets
across China, Korea, eastern Russia, Taiwan, Mainland southeast Asia, and
Japan, taking a critical approach to dating evidence, evidence for
cultivation, and morphological domestication. There is no evidence to
suggest that millets and rice were domesticated simultaneously within a
single region. Instead, 5 regions of north China are candidates for
independent early cultivation of millets that led to domestication, and 3
regions of the Yangtze...

Language and language-in-education planning in multilingual India: a
minoritized language perspective Introduction: Languages and linguistic
minorities in India
<https://www.academia.edu/t/a-MKkLQqN-r7o0U/24199201/Language_and_language-in-education_planning_in_multilingual_India_a_minoritized_language_perspective_Introduction_Languages_and_linguistic_minorities_in_India>

This article explores India's linguistic diversity from a language policy
perspective, emphasizing policies relevant to linguistic minorities. The
Kumaun region of Utterakhand provides a local, minority-language
perspective on national-level language planning. A look at the complexity
of counting India's languages reveals language planning implicit in the
Indian census. The more explicit status planning involved in the naming of
official languages is explored in the Indian Constitution. An overview of
India's language-in-education policies for languages to be taught and
languages to be used...

Suppose we are wrong about the Austronesian settlement of Taiwan
<https://www.academia.edu/t/a-MKkLQqN-r7o0U/37593264/Suppose_we_are_wrong_about_the_Austronesian_settlement_of_Taiwan>

The current model of the prehistory of Taiwan assumes that it was first
settled some 30,000 years ago by a population of unknown affinities, who
reached what is now and island via a landbridge, at a time of much lower
sea-levels. Some 5500 years ago, the Ta Pen Keng (TPK) culture, attested on
the Peng Hu islands off the shore of Fujian, apparently represents an
incoming Neolithic population. Similar TPK sites are recorded around the
shores of Taiwan in the centuries immediately following this. The pervasive
assumption has been that these early settlers were the bearers of the
Austronesian...

Historical linguistics
<https://www.academia.edu/t/a-MKkLQqN-r7o0U/25713387/Historical_linguistics>

At first blush it may seem odd that reserchers in Cognitive Linguistics
should have an interest in the historical development of language. After
all, one cannot conduct a lexical decision task with speakers of Old
English, nor is it possible to study the metaphorical underpinnings of
gestures that accompanied conversations in Hittite. How can a cognitive
approach to language history be anything but utter speculation? This
chapter will make the case that looking at language change is not only
perfectly in line with the cognitive ...

to a early edition of Cicero by Agostino Vespucci in October 1503, that
discusses Leonardo da Vinci. It includes the earliest known mention of the
Mona Lisa, and information about a painting of St Anne and the Battle of
Anghiari. From the Leonardo da Vinci Society Newsletter, May 2008.
