Hi all,

This may overlap a bit with the thread that people have already responded to, but I am teaching a linguistic anthropology methods course in the fall and would love suggestions for resources about online linguistic anthropology methods in particular, as I don’t believe my students will be able to do any face-to-face engagement.

Thanks so much and take care,

Robin

There are also some very useful materials on the SLA Language and Social Justice Teaching materials site: http://linguisticanthropology.org/resources/teaching/<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http%3a%2f%2flinguisticanthropology.org%2fresources%2fteaching%2f&c=E,1,4tjMBvHa1fgLQ8fmZ3AZ0IFqG11rHqB18DR4M9qK1fQpsRb7Um4pq47x2rwqxGLO-NCLUZpBS3crwi38TnQepzdTmJ4ua8RM6NPXIbqp&typo=1>

And I will echo Harriet’s recommendation of our textbook and workbook/reader, which includes a lot of hands-on work and for which we have written a pretty comprehensive Instructor’s Manual. (I do not especially recommend the test bank that the publisher put together…)

Hi Shannon,
My textbook and workbook/reader combo is now in its 4th edition (this one woth Judith MS Pine as co-author). There are chapters focusing on race/ethnicity and also gender issues but those concerns are integrated througout the texts. Jane Hill's seminal article on language and white racism is in the reader, too.

The article is titled “Linguistic Re-Formation in Florida Heartland Schools: School Erasures of Indigenous Latino Languages” and it has just come out in the American Educational Research Journal (the flagship journal of the American Educational Research Association). I think the article provides a good example of work that is ground in and extends theory, offers clear explanations of method and data, and has an applied component. If you or any folks want to assign it as part of your/their syllabus, I would be glad to skype in for a class meeting to talk about it. The only thing I ask is that PDFs not be posted on blackboard and instead links used so that the actual counts of readers is accurate—my uni paid for it to be open access so links should work just fine.

Hello all,

I have been asked to teach an introductory Language and Culture course (which I have not done before). I wonder if anyone might have some suggestions for developing such a course especially in these times of COVID-19 and the race issues we are experiencing. This will be an online course, so I would welcome any advice/thoughts on how to exploit the class modality to explore language and culture as well.
Thanks all!
Kind Regards,
Shannon Bischoff
