JOB DESCRIPTION
 
A Research Assistant in CALL is required for three months to work on
the SAFRAN project.  The project is funded by FRANCIL and the current
post by ELSNET.
 
SAFRAN aims to develop a CALL software package for the learning of
spoken and written French as a foreign language that will make use of
the ressources offered by multimedia workstations with the progressive
integration of tools developed from computational linguistics
technology.
 
The project consortium is co-ordinated by LATL in Geneva, and includes
further academic partners in Bulgaria, Switzerland, France and
Hungary.  The UMIST team, led by Mrs Marie-Josie Hamel, is concerned
with the design of linguistic and pedagogic material for the CALL
software.
 
DUTIES
 
The work of the Research Assistant will involve the development of
multimedia tutorials for the learning of French phonetics.
Documentation and the production of project deliverables, including
progress reports, are essential duties of the post, as is the
dissemination of results.  Qualifications and Experience The person
appointed will be a graduate in Linguistics and French, Computational
Linguistics and French, Applied French or a cognate discipline.  You
should have expertise in most of the following areas:
 
Phonetics of French
Teaching French as a second language
Development of pedagogic material for CALL systems
Delphi, ToolBook or any other programming language for CALL
 
Personal qualities
 
You must be a native speaker or a near native speaker of French, very
effective in written communication.  You will need to be technically
resourceful as well as having mastery of the theoretical background.
You should be capable of working effectively within a small team, of
meeting deadlines and of producing high quality work without excessive
supervision.  However, you must be prepared to adapt your work to the
requirements of collaboration in a distributed project team, and have
a co-operative disposition.
 
Duration of Post
 
The post is available from 1st June 1996 for a period of three months.
Successful completion of the work would qualify the candidate for
consideration for a UMIST Research Studentship in Language
Engineering, starting in September 1996.  If selected for a
studentship, the candidate would be expected to work toward a MSc by
research within the framework of SAFRAN.
 
Salary
 
Calculated on the Research Assistant 1b scale: 14,317 pounds per annum.

 The Program in Linguistics at the University of Michigan invites
 applications for a faculty position in syntax at the assistant
 (tenure-track) or, possibly, early associate (tenured) professor
 level, beginning Fall, 1997.  We seek outstanding applicants with
 teaching and research expertise in formal syntax, preferably with
 specializations in comparative or cross-linguistic studies. Secondary
 specializations in computational linguistics, neurolinguistics, or
 psycholinguistics are especially welcome. Applicants should be able
 to relate their research to other subdisciplines or cognate fields.
 A Ph.D. by the start of the appointment is required.
