Subject:  Gossip
 
I am currently polishing a paper concerning the empowering aspects of GOSSIP
as it applies to forging new relationships between persons of like gender.
While Deborah Tannen offers some keen insight into this function of Gossip, I
am anxious for input from other sources. Specifically, are these new
relationships based on the flow of information about people and events? Do
they require this interchange of gossip to remain vital?

Does anyone know about discussion lists or networks or web pages
about German as a Foreign Language? If no discussion lists on
specifically this topic exist, would anyone be interested in opening
such a discussion list?

Subject:  referring to the new millenium
 
 
While considering the pronunciation of numerals in text-to-speech
synthesis I have run into the following question: how will we refer to
the first few years of the new millenium?  Here are some
possibilities:
 
2000:
  the year two thousand
  two thousand
  twenty hundred
 
2001:
  two thousand and one
  two thousand one
  twenty oh one
 
>>From 2010-2999, will "twenty ten" through "twenty nine ninety nine"
most likely be the norm?

Subject:  Wanted: Software for learning vocabulary
 
I am looking for software that will help me to learn vocabulary for
various languages.  I find that something akin to flash cards that keeps
track of what I have learned and what I have not works best for me.  I am
looking for software with flash cards of vocabulary and (perhaps) common
expressions in German, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Hebrew, and the
operating systems I have at my disposal are Windows95 and Linux.  If
anyone knows of any software packages of this kind I would appreciate it
if you could lead me to it.
