The Ph.D. in Linguistics is an academic degree designed primarily to provide

emphasizes disciplinary training and research methodology and culminates in
a dissertation--an extended work of original scholarship that contributes
substantially to the knowledge base in the field. Candidates for the Ph.D. in
Linguistics normally complete 60 hours of coursework beyond the B.A.
(including at least 14 dissertation credits) and pass a qualifying exam in
accordance with departmental regulations. Students specialize in one of four
tracks: General/Theoretical Linguistics; Second Language (L2) Theory; L2
Teacher Education, or L2 Program Development and Administration.
The University of Utah also offers an MA in Linguistics and graduate
certificate programs.
Support opportunities include ESL TAships, Linguistics TAships, research
assistantships, and a limited number of scholarships. Other financial
assistance opportunities exist at the College and the University levels. Please
check our website www.linguistics.utah.edu for further information. ESL TAs
must either be native speakers of English or have native-like proficiency in
English. Please check the website for information regarding scholarships and
teaching assistantships. You may request application materials for these
positions directly from the Department of Linguistics (801) 581-8047.
Eligibility: Holders of the B.A., M.A., M.S., or M.Ed from an accredited college
or university who have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 ('B') or above
are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program; Students applying to the
Ph.D. program are encouraged to complete a masters degree prior
to making an application. All students admitted to the Ph.D. program directly
from the B.A. are required to take course work at the M.A. level or
demonstrate skills equivalent to M.A. level students before taking Ph.D. level
courses and seminars.
