Abstract:
On the streets of the High and Late Middle Ages, as well as in the Early
Modern Period, long-distance traders, missionaries, pilgrims, knights,
crusaders, craftsmen, soldiers and messengers would meet. Yet what role did
the foreign languages with which these travelers were confronted play? What
were the difficulties caused by linguistic boundaries? How did people prepare
'linguistically' for their travels? How were language and grammar books used?
What does the source material say about encounters between different languages
and about successful and failed communication? Not least, how did travel
influence the knowledge of foreign languages? This anthology, edited by
Matthias Schulz, presents papers given at the conference of the same name
which was held at the University of Bamberg in November 2011. Based on
different research perspectives and reference points, the studies address
aspects of language acquisition and application both in preparation for and
during travel and examine specific language contact situations. (Harrassowitz
