Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics; Semantics; Syntax
Description:
The Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies at the National
University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a postdoctoral research
fellow position. The position is for two years, ideally beginning around
August 2022.
The research fellow will work with Dr. Nick Huang on the theme of
cross-linguistic variation in the formal syntactic and semantic properties of
attitude predicates (such as “think”, “want”, “know”). Of particular interest
is understanding what the range of variation might be and how that might or
might not pose complications for the learning of these predicates. The
research fellow will assist with developing, designing, and conducting studies
to address these questions.
Ideal candidates will bring familiarity with these questions and/or have
published on related topics. Previous experience with cross-linguistic
research, psycholinguistics (especially language acquisition), experimental
and corpus methods is highly desirable. There is no teaching obligation. The
research fellow must have their PhD in hand by the start of the position.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Funds exist
for travel to international conferences.
Information about working in NUS and living in Singapore is available at
http://www.nus.edu.sg/careers/whyjoinus.htm. The NUS Department of English,
Linguistics and Theatre Studies website can be found at
http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/ell/.
The deadline for applications is 19 May 2022, 23:59 (Singapore time, UTC +8).
Applicants should send to the application email below:
- A cover letter with a description of relevant research experience and
interests related to the project
- A CV
- Two examples of previous work
- The completed Personal Data Consent Form for job applicants available from
http://www.nus.edu.sg/careers/files/NUS-Personal-Data-Consent-for-Job-Applican
ts.pdf
There is no need for reference letters at this stage of the application,
although candidates should list two referees (names, affiliations, and contact
information) in their cover letter. One of the two referees should be the main
PhD supervisor.
Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Please contact Nick Huang at the
email address below with any questions.
Covid-19 Message:
At NUS, the health and safety of our staff and students are one of our utmost
priorities, and COVID vaccination supports our commitment to ensure the safety
of our community and to make NUS as safe and welcoming as possible. Many of
our roles require a significant amount of physical interactions with
students/staff/public members. Even for job roles that may be performed
remotely, there will be instances where on-campus presences are required.
In accordance with Singapore's legal requirements, unvaccinated workers will
not be able to work on the NUS premises with effect from 15 January 2022. As
such, job applicants will need to be fully COVID-19 vaccinated to secure
successful employment with NUS.
